3 days¥2500-3000 / personSpring and autumn are most comfortable; summers are hot282

Three days to read 13 dynasties of history. This route covers the Terracotta Army, Huaqing Palace, the city wall, the Forest of Steles, the Muslim Quarter and the Tang Dynasty night city — history by day, Tang-era lights by night. The metro is easy; for the Terracotta Army, take a day tour or private car to skip the transfers.

Itinerary

D1

Terracotta Army · Huaqing Palace

  1. Terracotta Army MuseumSight

The eighth wonder of the world — Pit 1 is jaw-dropping, Pit 2 has the kneeling archer details. Go in the morning before the tour buses.

  2. Huaqing PalaceSight

Hot-spring palace tied to the Emperor Xuanzong and Yang Guifei love story; an evening outdoor show, 'Song of Everlasting Sorrow', is optional.

D2

City Wall · Forest of Steles · Muslim Quarter

  1. Xi'an City WallActivity

The most complete ancient city wall in China — rent a bike and ride the full loop above the old-meets-new cityscape.

  2. Forest of Steles MuseumSight

A paradise for calligraphy lovers — original works by masters like Yan Zhenqing; remarkable density of artifacts.

  3. Muslim Quarter & Sajin BridgeFood

Lamb paomo, roujiamo, biangbiang noodles and jinggao — Sajin Bridge is the more local pick.

D3

Big Wild Goose Pagoda · Tang night city

  1. Shaanxi History MuseumSight

Free, reservation-only; the Hejiacun gold and silver and the Tang tomb murals are the highlights — book the Treasure Gallery.

  2. Big Wild Goose PagodaSight

Where the monk Xuanzang translated the sutras; the musical fountain on the north square is lovely at dusk.

  3. Tang Everbright CitySight

A Tang-themed promenade — under the lights it feels like a trip back to Chang'an, with non-stop street performances.

Tips

1) Hire a guide or rent an audio guide for the Terracotta Army — otherwise it's just pits. Visit in the order 1 → 3 → 2. 2) The Muslim Quarter is touristy; locals prefer Sajin Bridge and Da Pi Yuan. Tear the bread yourself for proper paomo. 3) City-wall bike deposit takes a credit card; a full loop from the South Gate is ~100 minutes — ride at sunset. 4) Tang Everbright City peaks after 8pm; arrive early for a good spot to watch the 'tumbler lady' performer.
