Based on long-term monthly climate normals (≈1991–2020). Verdicts weigh temperature comfort, rainfall and typical crowds.
For most of China, the best times are spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October), when temperatures are mild, skies are clearer, and rainfall is lower. Summer (June–August) is hot, humid and the wettest season across the east and south, while winter is cold and dry in the north. The ideal window does shift by region — use the widget above to check your specific cities.
September and October are the best months to visit Beijing — warm, dry days with crisp blue skies and golden autumn colour. Late April and May are the next best window. Avoid July and August (hot, humid and the rainiest months) and the deep cold of December–January, though winter does bring dramatic snow to the Great Wall.
October and November are the most reliably pleasant in Shanghai — cool, dry and clear. Spring (March–May) is also lovely with cherry blossoms, though wetter. Avoid July and August, which are hot, humid and carry typhoon risk.
September to November offers the clearest skies and best visibility for Li River cruises and karst photography, with manageable crowds. April–May is lush and green but much wetter — May and June bring the heaviest rain of the year, which can swell the river and obscure the peaks in mist.
Winter (excluding Chinese New Year) and the hot, wet months of July–August generally have the lowest hotel and flight prices. Avoid the peak-price periods: Chinese New Year (late Jan/Feb), the May Day holiday, and Golden Week (1–7 October), when domestic travel surges and prices spike.
Head north to Harbin for the spectacular Ice & Snow Festival in January, or south to Guangzhou and the subtropical cities, which stay mild. Chengdu and the panda bases are pleasant year-round. Winter is also the quietest and cheapest season at major sights like the Great Wall and the Forbidden City.
