Why Visit Chengdu?

Chengdu is arguably the most livable city in China — a place where people actually sit down, slow down, and enjoy themselves. Its residents are famous for their love of mahjong, teahouse culture, and food. And the food here is extraordinary: Sichuan cuisine is one of the world's great culinary traditions, and Chengdu is its source. Add giant pandas, Tibetan culture, and some of the best day trips in China, and you have a city that rewards as long as you're willing to stay.

The Giant Pandas: Everything You Need to Know

The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is the best place in the world to see giant pandas in a near-natural environment. Over 200 pandas live here — both giant and red varieties. The key is arriving early: pandas are most active during the 8–10 am morning feeding, and by midday many are asleep. Book tickets online at least a week in advance. The base is 10 km north of the city (metro Line 3 to Panda Avenue, then a short bus ride).

Sichuan Hot Pot: A Beginner's Guide

Sichuan hot pot is a communal dining experience in which raw ingredients — thinly sliced beef, tripe, lotus root, tofu, mushrooms — are cooked in a simmering pot of chilli-and-Sichuan-peppercorn broth. The peppercorn creates a distinctive numbing sensation (麻, má) alongside the chilli heat (辣, là). Popular chains: Haidilao (famous for table service theatrics), Xiaolongkan, and countless local spots around Sima Bridge.

Day Trips from Chengdu

The Leshan Giant Buddha (2 hrs by express bus) is unmissable — a 71-metre Tang dynasty figure carved into a cliff above the confluence of three rivers. Mount Emei (3 hrs) is a sacred Buddhist mountain with ancient temples and golden-roofed pagodas. Jiuzhaigou Valley (9 hrs by bus or 45 min by flight) is a UNESCO World Heritage site of turquoise lakes and waterfalls — China's most spectacular natural scenery.

Best Time to Visit Chengdu

Chengdu's basin geography means it's overcast for much of the year — a local saying goes "the Sichuan dog barks at the sun" because sunshine is so rare. Despite this, weather is mild year-round. Spring (March–May) and Autumn (September–October) are most pleasant; summer is warm and humid. The panda base is worth visiting in any season.
