Guilin wins — the Li River landscape has been central to Chinese art, poetry, and culture for 1,200 years. It appears on the 20-yuan note. Zhangjiajie's cultural significance is largely modern (post-Avatar).
Guilin wins — Guilin rice noodles and Yangshuo beer fish are notable regional dishes. Zhangjiajie's food culture is less distinctive.
Zhangjiajie wins for drama — the floating sandstone pillars are utterly unlike anything else on earth. Guilin wins for classical Chinese landscape photography.
Guilin — better transport connections, more varied activities, and the Li River cruise is a definitive China experience.
Guilin — cycling in Yangshuo is excellent for families; the Li River cruise suits all ages. Zhangjiajie's glass bridge and steep terrain are less family-friendly.
If you love nature and want the most dramatic landscape in China, Zhangjiajie is extraordinary. If you want a more rounded experience with easier logistics and the classic Chinese landscape, choose Guilin. Ideally, visit both on a southern China loop.

They're both extraordinary but completely different. Guilin's karst peaks rise from flat river plains in a classical, serene panorama. Zhangjiajie's sandstone pillars soar vertically from forest floors in something resembling a science fiction film. Both are legitimately world-class.
Yes — they're both in southern/central China and can be combined. A realistic itinerary: fly Guilin → 4 days → fly or train to Zhangjiajie → 3 days → fly home. Total: 7–8 days.
Yes. Cable cars and shuttle buses provide access to most viewpoints. The glass bridge is a gentle walk. Tianmen Mountain is accessible by cable car. You don't need to be a serious hiker to experience the landscape.
