Verdict by Category

For History

Neither excels — Shanghai's history is colonial-era (post-1840s); Chengdu's Three Kingdoms heritage is interesting but limited in surviving sites. For history, visit Beijing or Xi'an instead.

For Food

Chengdu wins — Sichuan cuisine is one of the world's great culinary traditions, and Chengdu is its birthplace. Hot pot, mapo tofu, and dan dan noodles are extraordinary. Shanghai wins for international variety and fine dining.

For Photography

Shanghai wins for urban photography. Chengdu wins for wildlife photography (pandas) and day-trip landscapes (Jiuzhaigou, Emei).

For First-Timers

Shanghai — better connected internationally and more straightforward to navigate. Chengdu is excellent for return visitors or as part of a longer China itinerary.

For Families

Chengdu wins easily — the giant pandas alone make it a family favourite. Leshan Giant Buddha and Sichuan hot pot (mild options available) are also great for families.

Overall Verdict

Visit Shanghai if you want cosmopolitan energy, international dining, and easy connections. Visit Chengdu if you want giant pandas, the world's most exciting spicy food culture, and a genuinely relaxing Chinese city. They serve completely different travel needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Chengdu worth visiting without seeing the pandas?

Yes — the food alone justifies the trip. Sichuan hot pot in Chengdu is a genuinely life-changing experience. Jinli, Kuanzhai Alley, and the day trip to Leshan are also excellent. But the pandas are a major draw — we'd strongly recommend including them.

How do I get from Shanghai to Chengdu?

The most convenient option is a 2.5-hour direct flight. High-speed trains run (approximately 11 hrs) but are a long journey. Most visitors fly.

Is Chengdu a good base for Tibet?

Yes — most Tibet tour permits are arranged through Chengdu, and daily flights connect Chengdu to Lhasa (2.5 hrs). Acclimatise in Chengdu for 1–2 days before the altitude.
