Quick answer
Yunnan's intangible cultural heritage is best experienced on the Dali–Lijiang route through two hands-on traditions: the blue-and-white Bai tie-dye of Zhoucheng village near Dali, and the pictographic script, dance and dress of Naxi Dongba culture around Lijiang. See both below, then plan the trip.

Bai Indigo Tie-Dye

In Zhoucheng village near Dali, Bai artisans stitch and bind white cotton, then dip it again and again in fermented indigo (板蓝根) vats to grow the deep blue-and-white patterns that hang from every rafter.

Naxi Dongba Culture

Around Lijiang, the Naxi keep Dongba — the world's last living pictographic script — alongside courtyard circle dances and the 'seven-star' sheepskin cape. Sit in on a class and read the picture-words yourself.

Frequently asked questions
What is Yunnan intangible cultural heritage?
Intangible cultural heritage means living traditions — crafts, languages, music and rituals — passed down through generations. Yunnan is China's most ethnically diverse province, so its heritage is unusually rich: Bai indigo tie-dye around Dali, Naxi Dongba script and dance around Lijiang, plus silverwork, Pu'er tea and many ethnic festivals.
Where can I experience Yunnan's living heritage?
The two easiest hands-on experiences are Bai tie-dye in Zhoucheng village near Dali (a recognised heritage workshop where you can dye your own scarf) and Naxi Dongba culture in and around Lijiang old town (Dongba script demonstrations, dance and dress). Both sit on the popular Kunming–Dali–Lijiang route.
What is Bai tie-dye?
Bai tie-dye (白族扎染) is a resist-dye craft of the Bai people around Dali. Cloth is hand-stitched or bound, then repeatedly dipped in a fermented natural-indigo vat; the bound areas resist the dye and stay white, creating soft blue-and-white patterns. It is national intangible cultural heritage.
What is Dongba script?
Dongba is the pictographic writing of the Naxi people around Lijiang, used by their Dongba priests. It is often called the world's only living pictographic script — words are drawn as small pictures — and is protected as intangible cultural heritage.
