The last living pictographs

The Naxi (纳西族) settled the plateau below Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and built the old town of Lijiang, now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Their Dongbapriests recorded myth and ritual in a pictographic script in which each word is a tiny picture — a script still read and written today, which is why it is called the world's last livingpictographic writing. The Dongba manuscripts are inscribed on UNESCO's Memory of the World register, and today keepers teach the characters to visitors as well as apprentices.
